A baby deer that fell into a back-yard swimming pool in Grass Valley was saved after a German shepherd dog named Gus alerted his sleeping owner. Al Bonde, 78, a retired chicken rancher, said he discovered the fawn splashing in the unfenced pool behind his home near California 174 after the dog awakened him. “I pulled the little guy out of the pool and dried it off,” Bonde said. “The dog licked the little deer while I was drying it off. I turned him loose. He saw his mother in the brush, and he scampered off with her.”
