For the first time, a team coached by Mike Shanahan lined up against another team Thursday, and the Raiders’ rookie coach is still undefeated.

Both of his quarterback hopefuls, Vince Evans and Steve Beuerlein, looked good. Each led the No. 1 offense on a touchdown drive, and the Raider rookies-plus-selected-veterans defeated their Dallas counterparts, 12-6, in a scrimmage.

Evans, who started the scrimmage, was 4 for 8 for 69 yards. Beuerlein was 5 for 7 for 85, including a 7-yard touchdown pass to No. 1 draft pick Tim Brown.

Evans and Beuerlein split the first three possessions. Rusty Hilger, working the last possession with the No. 3 unit, was 2 for 7.

The scrimmage was enlivened by the hands, feet and mouth of the Cowboys’ No. 1 pick, flashy receiver Michael Irvin of Miami, whom the Raiders would have probably picked if Brown had been gone.

After an afternoon of woofing at whoever was in his area, Irvin ran into Zeph Lee, the ex-USC halfback who is trying to become a cornerback, on an incompletion at the goal line. Meanwhile Raider free agent safety David Greenwood, a star at Wisconsin and in the USFL, snarled at Irvin, “Stand up, you chicken . . . !”

After the scrimmage, Irvin was still taunting Lee.

“I’m the baddest you ever run into, chump!” yelled Irvin.

Now you know why the Raiders liked him.

Raider Notes

The veterans are officially due today, and there’s still no sign of Matt Millen and Stacey Toran. Mike Shanahan, again pronouncing himself “disappointed,” said there’d be a $1,000-a-day fine, until he was reminded that both players are free agents. “That’s a good point,” Shanahan said. . . . The Raiders and Millen are said to be only $50,000 apart on a 2-year contract, but a source said the Raiders and Toran are “not close.” Toran’s agent, Howard Slusher, is reportedly talking about pressing his client’s claim to be a free agent because the Raiders didn’t send a copy of his new contract to the NFL Players Assn. on time. It’s a claim the Raiders bitterly deny.
