Tennis Roundup : Agassi Survives Lapse, Gains Semifinal Berth

Second-seeded Andre Agassi survived a lapse in the second set and overcame No. 10-seeded Jay Berger, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, Friday in the quarterfinals of the $601,500 Volvo International tennis tournament at Stratton Mountain, Vt.

Agassi will face 12th-seeded Dan Goldie in the semifinals today. Goldie defeated 17-year-old Jim Courier, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

In other matches, ninth-seeded Darren Cahill of Australia eliminated Roger Smith of the Bahamas, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Paul Annacone, seeded 13th, outlasted Marty Davis, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

Top-seeded Yannick Noah of France, playing his third straight three-set match, squeaked into the semifinals of the $245,000 Grand Prix tournament at Bordeaux, France, by beating eighth-seeded Lawson Duncan, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4.

Noah next meets Ronald Agenor of Haiti, who upset fourth-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 6-4, 6-4.

Steffi Graf of West Germany beat Raffaella Reggi of Italy, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals of a $200,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Hamburg, West Germany.

In other matches, Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria beat Isabel Cueto of West Germany, 6-2, 7-6; Radka Zubrakova of Czechoslovakia beat Silke Meier of West Germany, 6-2, 6-1, and Bettina Fulco of Argentina beat Sandra Cecchini of Italy, 7-5, 6-1.
