Few could say that the 1987 San Diego-Los Angeles high school all-star football game lacked intensity. If this year’s game is as explosive, those in attendance can expect plenty of action--on the field and on the sidelines.

Last summer’s game featured as much fisticuffs as football in a 26-19 San Diego victory. Tonight’s game, which pits players from the City and San Diego Sections, starts at 7:30 at Mesa Community College in San Diego.

The 1987 game was in the headlines well before kickoff when the San Diego team was sent home from its camp for rowdy behavior. The San Diego team later made an unannounced visit to the City practice site at the Naval Training Center, a move that annoyed City players and coaches.

“That really fired up everybody on the City team,” event coordinator Jerry Weiner said.

The City team trailed, 19-0, at halftime and rallied to tie the score before falling behind, 26-19, on a kickoff return for touchdown. The City drove to the San Diego 10-yard line where its drive stalled in the game’s closing moments.

The 1988 City team will be led by quarterback Jeremy Leach, the City player of the year who passed for 2,666 yards and 35 touchdowns in leading Granada Hills to the 4-A title. The City will be running an option offense.

Leach will be joined by three teammates--wide receiver Kyle Jan, center Joe Beauvias and defensive back Kevin Carmichael.

Also in the backfield are running backs Bryan Addison of Chatsworth and Ronald Wilkinson of Reseda.

The City is coached by Monroe’s Frank D’Alessandro and San Pedro’s Henry Pacheco.
