The driver of a tanker-trailer carrying 6,500 gallons of drinking water led police and California Highway Patrol officers on a 65-mile freeway chase Thursday from Newhall to Alhambra, where one of his two tanks flipped over, officials said.

The driver, Bernadino Lopez, 46, of La Habra was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, evading arrest and assault on a police officer, CHP Sgt. John Novak said.

Authorities said a Los Angeles police officer on a motorcycle first spotted the truck speeding and weaving on the southbound Antelope Valley Freeway near Sierra Highway in the Newhall area about 1:18 p.m. When the officer attempted to pull the truck over, the driver sped off and soon had two helicopters and numerous police and CHP cars in pursuit.
