Alan Christian of Murietta won the four-lap scratch main event in front of 3,102 Friday in the weekly speedway program at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

There were two crashes on the race card, and four riders were taken to College Hospital in Costa Mesa.

In a scratch main heat, Louis Kossuth of Brea crashed into Bobby Ott of Redondo Beach on Turn 4 of the first lap. Ott was thrown from his bike into the crash wall. In the first heat of the second division, Don Odum and Kelly Inman collided on the back straightaway and were taken off on stretchers.

“This was the worst night of crashes I’ve ever seen here,” said Harry Oxley, event promoter.

Hospital officials wouldn’t comment on the condition of any of the riders.

Doug Bowers of Bellflower won the eight-lap handicap main event. Shawn McConnell of Brea was second, Brad Oxley of San Clemente was third and Greg Hancock of Costa Mesa fourth.
