Clabber Girl Gets 2nd Straight Stakes Win in Chula Vista ‘Cap

Share

Clabber Girl, a 5-year-old daughter of Alydar, won just one stakes race through the first 34 starts of her career.

Now Clabber Girl has doubled that stakes total in just two weeks. She won the Rancho Bernardo Handicap two weeks ago here, then on Saturday against a smaller but better field in the $100,000 Chula Vista Handicap she overtook Integra in the late stretch to win by three-quarters of a length before 22,117 fans.

Annoconnor, who also overhauled Integra with a run along the fence toward the finish, wound up second, 1 lengths ahead of Integra, who was 3 1/2 lengths better than Behind the Scenes. With the scratches of Gayane and Affordable Price, Abloom was the only other starter in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Under Chris McCarron, who was riding her for the first time, Clabber Girl was timed in 1:41 3/5 and paid $5.40 for a $2 win ticket. Trainer Wayne Lukas’ mare finished fourth, 8 lengths behind the victorious 42-1 longshot Annoconnor, in the Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park on July 17, but she went off as the favorite Saturday.

The win was Clabber Girl’s 8th in 36 starts and sent her earnings over the $972,000 mark.

Integra, ridden by Gary Stevens, took the lead on the far turn and held it through most of the stretch. But in the last sixteenth of a mile, Clabber Girl passed her on the outside while Annoconnor, ridden by Corey Black, unsuccessfully rallied inside.
