Ceremony Will Present Nunn With IBF Belt

Share

The International Boxing Federation middleweight championship belt will be presented to Michael Nunn on Tuesday night at the Country Club in Reseda. Nunn won the belt last month by knocking out previously unbeaten Frank Tate, but Tate and his handlers refused to surrender the belt.

“I think Frank wore the belt out of the ring after Michael knocked him out,” Dan Goossen, Nunn’s manager, said in jest. “I think Frank wore it around his head to hold one of the ice packs in place.”

Jerry Nathanson of the IBF will make the presentation, which will take place before a five-bout card at the Country Club.

Bantamweight Frankie Duarte, who was supposed to fight Miguel Juarez in the main event, was forced to pull out last week when he received a cut over an eye during a sparring session.

In one of two scheduled 10-round junior lightweight bouts, Pedro Aguirre of Mexico City, 11-2 with 11 knockouts, takes on Sam Ray Taylor of San Diego, 8-4 with four knockouts. In the other 10-rounder, Geraldo Lopez of Bell, 8-2 with seven KOs, fights Kelvin Lampkin (16-18) of Los Angeles. There are also three, six-round bouts.

The fights, which will be broadcast live by the Z-Channel, begin at 7 p.m. A tape of the Nunn-Tate fight will be shown at 5:45 p.m.
