Golf Roundup : Green Shoots a 68, Takes Two-Shot Lead in Canada

Ken Green birdied the final hole Saturday to take a two-stroke lead in the third round of the $750,000 Canadian Open golf tournament at Oakville, Canada.

Green shot a 4-under-par 68 and completed 54 holes over the now rain-soaked Glen Abbey Golf Club course in Ontario with a total of 13-under-par 203.

Jay Delsing, a non-winner in five years on the PGA Tour, also had a 68 and was second at 205. Bob Tway, who hasn’t won since his player-of-the-year season in 1986, and Scott Verplank were another stroke back. Tway had a 66 and Verplank a 67.

PGA champion Jeff Sluman, who led or shared the lead through the first two rounds, had a two-shot edge at one point on the front nine.

But Sluman made a pair of double bogeys in a three-hole stretch and finished with a 73 that left him at 208.

Jack Nicklaus, who had some hopes of winning his first Canadian Open when he shot a first-round 68, took himself out of contention with a 76.

Donna White shot a 6-under-par 66 to take the lead in the first round of the $250,000 LPGA Rail tournament at Springfield, Ill.

White had six birdies as she moved one stroke ahead of Adele Lukken and Marta Figueras-Dotti.

Two-time champion Betsy King and Ayako Okamoto were among six players tied at 68.

Ian Woosnam of Wales shot a 6-under-par 66 for a 54-hole total of 200 to take a one-stroke lead over Spain’s Severiano Ballesteros after three rounds of the $677,000 European Masters tournament at Crans, Switzerland. Ballesteros, the leader after the first two rounds, shot a 68.
