Golf Roundup : Longshot Ties Barr for Lead at Milwaukee

Jim Gallagher, who had to win a playoff in the qualifying round to enter the tournament, shot his second straight 67 Friday to tie Canadian Dave Barr for the lead after two rounds of the $700,000 Greater Milwaukee Open golf tournament.

Gallagher and Barr, who shot a 68, were tied at 10-under-par 134 after two trips around the 7,030-yard Tuckaway Country Club course.

Barr and Corey Pavin shared the lead going into Friday’s round, but Pavin slipped to an even-par 72 and dropped four shots back.

“I never really was in that much trouble out there,” said Barr, who rolled in a 25-foot putt on the 405-yard 15th for a birdie that put him 9-under, then birdied No. 16. “I think I only missed three greens today. All in all I feel pretty good where I am right now.”

Gallagher felt even better.

After four years on the PGA Tour, Gallagher lost his Tour card following a poor showing in 1987. He’s been limited to a handful of tournaments this year.

“I’m excited, I really am,” Gallagher said. “I played really solid all day. I’ve played well all year.”

David Ogrin, also seeking his first Tour win, was third at 136 after shooting a 66.

Donnie Hammond, who had a 69, Chip Beck, who shot a 67, Mike Sullivan, who had a 68, and Mike Bender, with a 69, were next at 137.

Colleen Walker and Susan Sanders shot 4-under-par 68s for a one-shot lead over Cathy Johnston in the opening round of the $250,000 Cellular One-Ping tournament at Portland, Ore.

Walker, playing in the morning, used an accurate driver and a consistent putter to fashion a bogeyless round that featured four birdies on the 6,285-yard Riverside Golf and Country Club course.

Sanders, playing just up the road from her hometown of Salem, finished her afternoon round with a flourish, getting birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes.

Muffin Spencer-Devlin led a group of five golfers at 70.

Sherri Turner, the LPGA’s top money winner, shot a 73, while defending champion Nancy Lopez, No. 2 on the money list, had a 76.

Gary Player birdied his last two holes for a 65 to tie Dale Douglass, who shot a 68, for the lead at 9-under-par 135 for 36 holes in the $350,000 GTE North seniors tournament at Indianapolis.

Miller Barber, Orville Moody, J.C. Goosie and Dick Rhyan are one shot back. First-day leader Charles Coody, who bogeyed his final hole for a 71, was tied with Bob Erickson and Ken Still at 137 heading into today’s final round.

Briton Denis Durnian lost his one-stroke advantage and had to settle for a four-way tie for the lead after two rounds of the $500,000 European Open at Sunningdale, England.

Durnian, whose concentration was unsettled by a brush with a television technician at the 15th hole that cost him a bogey, shot a 67 for a 36-hole total of 131, 9 under par. That left him tied with England’s Nick Faldo (65), Welshman Ian Woosnam (66) and Sweden’s Mats Lanner, whose 63 was only one shot off Faldo’s course record.
