Prep Football : Roundup : Troy Takes Advantage of Bad Snap on Punt to Record 7-6 Victory

Troy High School capitalized on a bad snap on a punt late in the fourth quarter Friday night to overcome Rancho Alamitos, 7-6, in both teams’ season opener before 1,200 at Fullerton District Stadium.

The Vaqueros took a 6-0 lead on a 19-play, 94-yard drive that took up 10 minutes 46 seconds of the second quarter. David Singletary, who had 110 yards in 31 carries, went over from 1 yard out.

Troy defensive tackle Clinton Davis set up the winning score for the Warriors by recovering an errant snap on the Rancho Alamitos’ 1-yard line. Quarterback Brad Zeppieri scored on a sneak with 2:37 remaining. Rob Duarte’s extra point gave Troy a 7-6 lead.

Troy was held to minus-three yards in the first half and finished with 152. Rancho Alamitos had 149 yards for the game.

Leuzinger 42, Laguna Beach 14--Junior quarterback Zachary Odom ran for to two touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Olympians before 600 at Laguna High School.

Odom scored on runs of 21 and 38 yards and passed 25 yards to senior Richey Jacobs for a touchdown.

The Olympians also burned the Artists on two other big plays. A 75-yard punt return by Jacobs in the first quarter and an 80-yard kickoff return by senior Damon Whitmore.

Laguna Beach, the defending Pacific Coast League champions, scored once in each half. Junior quarterback Aaron Scheid scored on a 5-yard run and senior tailback Shan Gray scored on a 6-yard run.

Scheid, in his first varsity start, completed 9 of 22 passes for 71 yards. Gray finished with 57 yards rushing.

Pacifica 7, Santa Ana Valley 7--Pacifica and Santa Ana Valley turned back late scoring threats to battle to a tie before 1,800 at Santa Ana Stadium.

Santa Ana Valley defensive back Don Sokphoungkhm intercepted a pass on his own 11 with less than 4 minutes left to stop a Pacifica drive.

And Pacifica defensive lineman Jeff Torrey recovered a fumble on the Mariner 32 with 11 seconds left to stop Santa Ana Valley.

Senior Jesse Lynch provided Santa Ana Valley with its only touchdown by returing the opening kickoff 78 yards for a score. The Falcons managed just 4 yards rushing and 64 passing--44 on the final drive.

Pacifica tailback Chris Shockley led the Mariners’ attack with 116 yards in 21 attempts. He scored the team’s touchdown with 9:12 left in the first half on an 8-yard run.

Pacifica quarterback Bobby Anderson completed 9 of 20 passes for 106 yards, but had two passes intercepted.

Ramona 21, Dana Hills 7--The Dolphins’ secondary was burned twice on long third-quarter touchdown passes at Dana Hills in front of about 1,000.

After a scoreless first half, Ramona quarterback Chad Waite got hot in the third quarter, hitting 6 of 8 passes for 169 yards. He was 9 of 19 for 183 yards in the game.

He completed a 49-yard scoring pass to Matt Dart 3 1/2 minutes into the third quarter to give Ramona a 7-0 lead. With seven seconds left in the quarter, Waite and Dart hooked up again, this time for 54 yards and anothertouchdown.

Dana Hills finally scored in the fourth quarter when Jerry Sunseri intercepted Waite at the Ramona 14, slipped a tackle, and went on to score to cut the lead to 14-7 with six minutes left in the game. Ramona came back behind strong defensive play. Dan Biondo intercepted Brent Gaut’s pass and ran 38 yards for the final score with 3:38 left in the game.

Northview 22, Sonora 15--Running back Mike Galindo scored on third-quarter touchdown runs of 48 and 34 yards to lead Northview at La Habra High School.

Galindo’s 34-yard scoring run with 5:02 left in the third quarter gave Northview a seemingly comfortable 22-3 lead, but Sonora staged a comeback.

Sonora running back Nathan Forrester scored on a 12-yard run, and defensive lineman Dan Johnson recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown to cut Northview’s lead to just 7 points with 3:03 left in the game.

However, the Northview offense was able to hold onto the ball until the final 45 seconds, and Sonora quarterback Jack Hay threw four straight incompletions in Sonora’s last possession.

Galindo finished with 149 yards in 18 carries for Northview.

Buena Park 20, Brea-Olinda 7--Matt Acevedo scored three touchdowns to lead Buena Park at Spaulding Stadium.

Trailing 7-0 in the third quarter, Acevedo, a senior quarterback, raced 67 yards with 8:45 remaining in the period. The Coyotes still trailed 7-6 on a missed conversion kick.

Following a 27-yard loss on a bad snap in punt formation, Acevedo took advantage of the Wildcats’ mistake by running 22 yards to give the Coyotes the lead for good.

Acevedo completed his busy evening by intercepting a Chad Marlow pass and returned it 59 yards for the score with 1:19 remaining in the game.

Acevedo rushed for 54 yards on nine carries, completed four of seven passes for 31 yards and added six tackles and two pass deflections as a defensive back.

Brea-Olinda, under new head Coach Jon Looney, scored its only touchdown late in the first quarter on an 11-yard pass from Marlow to Jason Clements. Wildcats running back Eddie Stewart gained 105 yards on 19 carries in the losing effort.

Rowland 14, Sunny Hills 13--The Raiders got touchdown runs by Darren Skinner and Corey Bogard to post the narrow win at Rowland.

Skinner scored on a 20-yard run and Bogard on a 2-yard run.

Ken Oberby and Brian Pizula both scored on 1-yard runs for Sunny Hills.
