Oceanside 24, Vista 0--Jerry Garrett rushed for one touchdown and kicked a field goal and three extra-points for visiting Oceanside, ranked No. 7 in the county, at No. 5 Vista. The Oceanside defense limited Vista just 121 yards, 42 in the second half. Greg Frazier scored on an 11-yard run in the first quarter to put Oceanside ahead, 7-0, and Garrett kicked a 27-yard field goal to make it 10-0 at halftime. Garrett scored on a six-yard run in the third quarter to make it 17-0.

Patrick Henry 10, Chula Vista 7--Patrick Henry’s defense stopped Chula Vista four times inside the five-yard line in the final minute as the host Patriots held on. Andy Trakas’ 43-yard field goal with 6:16 remaining in the fourth quarter snapped a 7-7 tie in a game dominated by defense. Neither team was able to gain 200 yards in total offense.

Carson 34, Sweetwater 0--After a scoreless first half, Carson, the state’s top ranked team, scored 21 third-quarter points at Sweetwater. Fred Gatlin scored on an 11-yard run with 9:21 left in the third quarter to put Carson ahead to stay, 7-0. Gatlin also passed 11 yards to Michael Ross for another touchdown. Perry Klein, who alternates at quarterback with Gatlin, threw two touchdown passes, including a 75-yarder to Larry Billoups. In the first half, Carson lost the ball three times on fumbles and had a touchdown called back by penalty.

Mission Bay 14, El Cajon Valley 6--Quarterback Brian Miranda scored on a 1-yard run in the final quarter for Mission Bay at El Cajon Valley. Mission Bay took a 7-0 lead in the second when safety Pat Betancourt returned a fumble 83 yards for a touchdown. Mission Bay’s Jason Surdy caught 2 passes for 43 yards, including a 22-yarder that set up the second touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Clairemont 6, St. Augustine 0--Clairemont halfback Antoine Henry ran 23 yards late in the final period at San Diego High.

Orange Glen 49, San Marcos 0--Cree Morris completed 13 of 16 passes for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns against San Marcos, which tied San Pasqual, 14-14, in the championship 2A game last year in the stadium. Jake Nyberg was his primary target, catching 8 passes for 127 yards. Shane Copeland was the leading rusher for Orange Glen with 157 yards on 18 carries.

Hoover 14, Montgomery 0--Running back Joe Odom and quarterback Bracey Simmons scored on first quarter runs for the Cardinals at Madison High. On defense, Simmons, John Akridge and Jerome Kennedy had interceptions stopping long Montgomery drives.

Coronado 28, Mountain Empire 6--Rich Bledsoe gave the Islanders all they needed with 210 yards rushing on 16 carries and 3 touchdowns. He finished the first half with 119 yards on 6 carries and also had an interception.

Holtville 43, Calipatria 0--Alex Wells threw four touchdown passes and ran for another to lead visiting Holtville. Wells hit wide receiver Jason Brown on scoring passes of 28, 9 and 31 yards. Wells ran three yards for a score in the third quarter to make it 29-0.

San Pasqual 42, Poway 28--Jose Castro rushed for four touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough for visiting Poway. San Pasqual’s Tony Medina ran for three touchdowns and had 79 yards on 17 carries. San Pasqual quarterback Andy Loveland was 6 of 10 for 131 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Markey.

Ramona 21, Dana Hills 7--Host Dana Hills’ secondary was burned twice on long third-quarter touchdown passes by quarterback Chad Waite. Waite, 6 of 8 for 169 yards in the third quarter, finished 9 of 19 for 183 yards. Waite threw scoring passes of 49 and 54 yards to Matt Dart. Dan Biondo intercepted a pass by Dana Hills’ Brent Gaut’s and returned it 38 yards for the final score with 3:38 left.

San Diego 12, Marian 12--Jerry Colin had touchdown runs of 27 and 5 yards but host Marian failed on both extra point attempts and was tied by San Diego. For San Diego, Mia Labovitz, the only girl playing county high school football, kicked a 27-yard field goal to give San Diego an early 3-0 lead. After a safety, the Cavers’ Brandon Scales scored on a 1-yard run. Tim Royer intercepted a Marian pass on the 10-yard-line with less than 3 minutes remaining to preserve the tie.

Mt. Miguel 15, Bonita Vista 12--Halfback Gene Ethridge scored twice for the Matadors in the third quarter to lead Mt. Miguel at Chula Vista. Running back John Funke carried the ball 22 times for the Barons for a career-high 146 yards. Funke ran 1 and 11 yards for touchdowns for Bonita Vista in the first and second quarters.
