Lady Lister, with Russell Baze aboard, took the advantage away from the leader in deep stretch to win the $64,400 Coronado Stakes by a three-quarters of a length Monday at Del Mar.

Shapiro’s Mistress with Corey Black aboard, finished second, six lengths in front of Hot Novel, ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye.

Lady Lister covered six furlongs over a fast track in 1:09 3/5 and earned $37,400 for the victory, her second in seven starts. She is trained by Joe Manzi.

Lady Lister, sent off as a 10-1 outsider in the field of six in the race for 2-year-old fillies, paid $22.80, $7 and $2.80. Shapiro’s Mistress returned $5 and $2.40, and Hot Novel, the 1-2 favorite of the crowd of 24,535, paid $2.10 to show.

“Joe (Manzi) told me this filly had some speed but not enough to go with the favorite,” Baze said. “He said to let the favorite go and try to pick her up late. It came up that way and when I asked her, she turned it on.”

Carrying 117 pounds, Lady Lister was wide down the backstretch, callenging Shapiro’s Mistress to gain the lead in the final furlong.

Shapiro’s Mistress, carrying 114, jostled with It’s First Advance in the initial strides and took the lead on the far turn but could not outfinish Lady Lister in the drive. Hot Novel, carrying 120, had a slow start but reached first place by the quarter marker and battled for the lead while inside Shapiro’s Mistress, then weakened in the final furlong.

“She just didn’t feel right,” Delahoussaye said of Hot Novel. “I don’t know what it was but it seemed something was bothering her. Maybe it was her shins or something.”
