Padre President Chub Feeney and Jerry Kapstein, the agent for the soon-to-be free agent pitcher Andy Hawkins, engaged in a shouting match in the club’s office hallways Wednesday that ended with Kapstein storming away and slamming a door so hard that a picture fell from a wall.

Kapstein and Feeney later blasted each other during impromptu press conferences during the Padres’ 6-5 loss to San Francisco. Their encounter took place at 3:20 p.m. in the main hallway of the club’s second-floor office in the stadium. Kapstein had arrived in a third atttempt to set up his first meeting with Feeney, only to find, through secretary Arleen Billings, that Feeney was unavailable until next week. While Kapstein stewed in the hallway, Feeney came down the hall.

“Why do you insist on chasing me all around like this?” Feeney asked. Responded Kapstein: “I’m sick and tired of waiting to see you.”

Standing within a few feet of each other, they then began shouting until Kapstein left, slamming the door behind him.
