Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth said Detroit Tigers outfielder Fred Lynn would be eligible for postseason play.
Lynn, who was traded from the Baltimore Orioles to the Tigers Aug. 31, failed to report to the team by the midnight deadline and was initially ruled ineligible for postseason play if the Tigers reach the American League playoffs.
“My review leads to the conviction that the rule needs to be changed because as currently enforced, it has the clear potential for recklessness,” Ueberroth said.
Lynn, speaking from Toronto, where the Tigers were playing the Blue Jays, said: “It won’t mean much if we don’t get in (the playoffs). But I’m glad to see it. It means other guys in that situation won’t have to fly across the country with the stress that I did.”
