Prep Roundup : Corona del Mar’s Lavelle Wins Race, Sets Record

Eddie Lavelle of Corona del Mar High School won the senior race in record time at the Laguna Hills Invitational cross-country meet Saturday at Laguna Hills High School.

Lavelle finished the 3-mile course in 14 minutes, 48 seconds, breaking the record of 14:58 set in 1986 by Mark Davis of San Diego.

Lavelle took the lead at the mile mark along with Dan Gould of Capistrano Valley, Mike Tansley of Dana Hills and Aaron Vali of University. With a half mile remaining, Lavelle surged to the finish.

Gould was second in 15:04, followed by Tansley in third (15:08), Vali fourth (15:09) and Steve Niednagel of Dana Hills fifth (15:18).

Corona del Mar, the second-ranked team in the Southern Section 4-A, won the senior boys division race with 38 points. University was second (85), Dana Hills, the top-ranked team in the 4-A, was third (108). Capistrano Valley was fourth (111) and Mission Viejo was fifth (148).

Corona del Mar, led by Chris Cannon (first, 16:15) won the boys junior-class division and the freshman division. Sean Dempsey finished first in the freshman division with a time of 16:41. Dan Niednagel of Dana Hills won the sophomore race in 15:54.

In water polo action, the La Serna tournament:

Capistrano Valley 14, Nogales 2--Capistrano Valley overcame a 7-7 tie earlier in the day against Los Altos to beat Nogales and win the 24-team La Serna Tournament with a 4-0-1 record.

In the Millikan tournament:

Fountain Valley 11, Downey 9--Trey Best and Dave Seely each scored three goals to lead Fountain Valley to the consolation championship. In an earlier game, Fountain Valley defeated Santa Barbara, 10-8, to advance to the consolation final, with Best scoring four goals.
