The starting times for the league championship games on Oct. 5 have been changed to accommodate the telecast of the vice presidential debate, the baseball commissioner’s office announced Tuesday.

The start of the first game of the American League playoffs, scheduled for the home of the East Division winner, was moved from 5:28 p.m. PDT to 10:20 a.m. The first pitch of Game 2 in the National League playoffs at Los Angeles was pushed back from 12:07 p.m. to 7:08 p.m.

The start of the 90-minute vice presidential debate between Sens. Lloyd Bentsen and Dan Quayle was moved from 6 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

“Although these changes will create a significant inconvenience to the clubs, leagues and baseball fans everywhere, baseball recognizes its responsibility in this election year to allow the Democratic and Republican parties access to a national forum in prime time,” Commissioner Peter Ueberroth said in a statement.

ABC will televise both series.
