Unseeded Michael Chang, 16, of Placentia, defeated sixth-seeded Dan Goldie of McLean, Va., 6-1, 6-4, in the first round of the Transamerica Open Tennis Championships in San Francisco.

Chang started strongly, breaking the former NCAA champion from Stanford twice in the first set and at 4-4 in the second. Then Chang, who had got in and out of trouble virtually every time he served, won the final game at love.

In the biggest upset of the first round, Richard Matuszewski, a qualifier ranked 166th in the world, ousted top-seeded Aaron Krickstein, 6-3, 6-4.
