Local News in Brief : El Toro : Crash Kills Bicyclist; Driver Is Arrested

A 22-year-old bicyclist died early Friday after being struck by a suspected drunk driver while trying to cross Los Alisos Boulevard in El Toro, authorities reported.

The California Highway Patrol identified the victim as Fidencio B. Roman, whose address was not immediately known. Roman was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where he died at 1:56 a.m. Friday.

Authorities said Carlos J. Benalcazar, 32, of El Toro was traveling west on Los Alisos at a high rate of speed just after 10 p.m. on Thursday when he struck Roman, who was riding a bicycle across Los Alisos just east of Rockfield Boulevard. Benalcazar was not injured.

Benalcazar reportedly fled the scene but later returned. He was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and hit-and-run driving and booked into County Jail, where he is being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.
