The Freedom Bowl and Disneyland announced plans to start a preseason college football game in 1990, pending NCAA approval.

The game would be played in the last week of August in Anaheim Stadium and would not interfere with the 5-year-old postseason Freedom Bowl. It would, however, butt heads with the 6-year-old Kickoff Classic, currently the only preseason game sanctioned by the NCAA.

Though he would not discuss finances, Disneyland executive vice president Jack Lindquist said the level of his company’s commitment would be “as great as any (bowl title sponsor) around.” That would mean Disneyland’s bankroll would exceed $2 million, reportedly about the amount Sunkist has committed to the Fiesta Bowl.

An NCAA vote on the plan is expected next January.
