Community College Roundup : Golden West’s Volleyball Team Sweeps Riverside Off Its Feet

The Golden West College women’s volleyball team made its Orange Empire Conference debut a successful one Tuesday with a three-game sweep of Riverside.

Jackie Cook, a sophomore transfer from Nebraska, had 15 kills and Maureen Flanagan 8 for Golden West in the 15-12, 15-8, 15-4, victory at home.

Golden West (2-1, 1-0) had won the South Coast Conference four of the past five years before switching to the Orange Empire Conference this season.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Golden West 1, Oxnard 1--Golden West’s Amy Newlander scored 15 minutes into the second half to give Golden West (2-2-5) a 1-0 lead, but Oxnard tied the score 2 minutes later. Alicia East had 8 saves for Golden West.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Golden West 1, Cuyamaca 1--Jason Britton scored in the first half for visiting Golden West (6-3-1) at Grossmont College. Rich Hollis had 12 saves for Golden West but allowed a second-half goal to Kevin Pohle for Cuyamaca (6-1-1).

In Orange Empire Conference water polo:

Orange Coast 15, Cypress 7--Tony Litwak scored 5 goals and John Wilson 4 for host OCC (11-1, 4-0).
