Far West Roundup : BYU Wins With Big Second Half

Sean Covey threw for 240 yards and a touchdown and ran for another, and Troy Long returned an interception for a score as Brigham Young University defeated Colorado State, 42-7, in a Western Athletic Conference game Saturday at Provo, Utah.

Covey, who completed 20 of 37 passes, directed three second-half scoring drives as the Cougars (4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play) outscored Colorado State, 36-0, in the second half.

BYU, which allowed Colorado State’s only score on an 80-yard pass from Scooter Molander to Tony Branch in the first quarter, gave Molander little time to throw, intercepting him 4 times and sacking him 4 times for 42 yards in losses.

Brian Mitchell intercepted Molander twice.

Molander completed only 8 of 24 passes for 140 yards.

Colorado State is 0-5 and 0-3.

Wyoming 55, San Diego St. 27--Dabby Dawson rushed for 225 yards and scored 4 touchdowns, and quarterback Randy Welniak accounted for 4 scores as the No. 16 Cowboys beat the Aztecs in a WAC game at San Diego.

The Cowboys improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the WAC. San Diego State fell to 1-4 and 1-1.

Dawson, who had 16 carries, topped his previous best of 125 yards against Louisville.

Dawson also scored on runs of 4, 10 and 11 yards. Welniak scored on runs of 14, 6 and 5 yards and threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ted Gilmore.

Welniak completed 15 of 25 passes for 190 yards.

Air Force 34, Navy 24--Quarterback Dee Dowis ran for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Falcons at Colorado Springs, Colo.

The victory, Air Force’s fourth against two defeats, gave the Falcons an advantage over Navy and Army in the race for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy.

The loss dropped Navy to 3-3.

Dowis, a 160-pound junior, scored both his touchdowns and picked up 114 of his rushing yards in the first half as the Falcons were breezing to a 21-10 halftime lead.

But Navy, behind the quarterbacking of Alton Grizzard and Gary McIntosh, closed the gap to 31-24 midway through the fourth quarter before Steve Yarbrough hit a 27-yard field goal to put the Midshipmen away.

Utah 33, New Mexico 27--Eddie Johnson ran for 129 yards and scored twice, and Scott Mitchell threw 2 touchdown passes as the Utes broke a 3-game losing streak in a WAC game at Albuquerque, N.M.

Mitchell threw scoring passes of 15 yards to Johnson and 4 yards to Curt Jones. Bryan Bero and Johnson had 3-yard scoring runs for the Utes, who led, 33-20, before a late New Mexico touchdown. Tim Wagstaff added field goals of 24 and 30 yards for Utah (2-3 and 1-2).

New Mexico (1-5 and 0-2) scored on a 2-yard run by Andre Wooten, field goals of 42 and 34 yards by Tim Walsh, a 15-yard run by Al Owens and a 3-yard pass from Jeremy Leach to John Duff.

Manuel Saiz intercepted a deflected Leach pass on New Mexico’s 25-yard line with 46 seconds remaining to end the Lobos’ hope for a come-from-behind victory.

New Mexico took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on Wooten’s 2-yard run to cap a 99-yard drive. New Mexico’s Phillip Vaughn recovered a Utah fumble on the Utes’ 32 two plays later, and Walsh’s 42-yard field goal made it 10-0.
