An Oceanside man and his ex-girlfriend died in an apparent murder-suicide that prompted an eight-hour special weapons and tactics team action, Oceanside police reported Sunday.

Police received an emergency call about 3:30 p.m. Saturday from a woman who told officers that her sister had been shot by the sister’s former boyfriend, Martin Santos, during an argument in an apartment on Poplar Road.

After pleading with Santos not to harm her or her baby, the woman fled from the apartment, police said. Shortly thereafter, other shots were heard coming from the apartment.

When police arrived, they could not establish contact with anyone in the apartment and asked for assistance from the Sheriff Department’s SWAT team.

The SWAT team barricaded the area and repeatedly tried unsuccessfully to reach Santos. Finally, about 11:30 p.m., police forced their way inside the apartment. There, they found both Santos and his ex-girlfriend, Blanca Olquin, 25, of Oceanside, dead of gunshot wounds.

Santos, 25, apparently shot Olquin five times before turning the gun on himself, police said.

As of late Sunday night, Oceanside police said that their investigation was continuing.
