College Roundup : Bakersfield No Match for CSUN, 3-0

Share

Cal State Bakersfield, in Northridge soccer Coach Marwan Ass’ad’s estimation, fielded the best team in school history in Wednesday’s California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game. Northridge, which has struggled all season to remain above .500, admittedly fielded one of its greenest squads.

Yet Northridge came away with a 3-0 win at Bakersfield, which had started the afternoon unbeaten in 11 games.

Despite the apparent disparity in win-loss records, Ass’ad said he predicted a win--and an offensive outpouring--earlier this week.

“I don’t really know why, but I had a feeling today would be the day we’d break loose and score some goals,” Ass’ad said. “We’ve finally started to come together. We’re starting to click the way I thought we could.”

After a scoreless first half, Northridge scored 12 minutes into the second half when Steve Lazarus returned a deflected shot off the Bakersfield goal keeper by teammate Rick Iverson.

Ten minutes later, sophomore forward Jimmy Hofferber took a pass from midfielder Scott Piri and scored from 18 yards, giving the Matadors (8-6 overall, 2-1 in conference play) a 2-0 lead.

Hofferber, who had not scored since the opener Sept. 1, scored 5 minutes later from 13 yards to complete the scoring.

Goal keeper Jeff Blumkin, a sophomore, recorded the shutout.

Bakersfield did not have history on its side--the Roadrunners (10-1-1, 2-1) have never beaten Northridge.

“They’re the best they’ve ever been,” Ass’ad said of the Roadrunners. “They were talking about a conference title beforehand.

“But I still think we can win it if we come together like we did today.”
