How to Get a Gate Put at a Railroad Crossing

1. Write a letter to: Mr. Raymond Toohey, Senior Transportation Engineer, Public Utilities Commission, 107 South Broadway, Los Angeles, Calif. 90012. Explain why you think a gate should be put at the crossing. If you know of any accidents or deaths that may have occurred at the crossing, be sure to mention that. Provide as much detail as possible in the letter.

2. Once your letter is received, a representative of the commission will go to the site and investigate.

3. If further investigation is needed, a commission representative, along with a city representative, will return to the site.

4. If it is then decided by both representatives that a gate is needed, the findings are presented to the railroad.

5. If all three parties--the commission, the city and the railroad--concur, the matter is taken to the federal government, which normally approves the gate installation. Cost of a new gate is assumed by the federal government (90%) and the city (10%).
