Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Faulty Burglar Alarm Leads to Two Arrests

Share

Two men reportedly were burglarizing a motor home early Thursday when a burglar alarm in a building next door malfunctioned, summoning police.

The men, apparently thinking the alarm sounded because of them, fled as an officer arrived at the scene in the 2900 block of Century Place, Police Lt. Gary Webster said.

Officer Mike Magnet released his police dog to chase them.

“That lent (the men) great motivation to make it to a chain-link fence, which they were able to climb,” Webster said. Police caught the unarmed suspects on the other side.

“There was no sign of tampering with the alarm at the business. In fact, it malfunctioned again later while officers were there,” Webster said. “It had nothing to do with them, it was just bad luck.”

Police arrested Isaias Fernandez, 20, and Miguel Bautista, 29, both of Costa Mesa, on suspicion of grand theft and vehicle burglary.
