Mike Sullivan Shoots a 63 and Leads Texas Open Golf by 1 After First Round
Mike Sullivan shot a 7-under-par 63 and took a 1-stroke lead Thursday in the first round of the $600,000 Texas Open golf tournament.
Sullivan, 33, made 7 birdies and an eagle, chipping in twice.
“The last time I was 7-under was 8 years ago, in the second round of the 1980 Southern Open,” said Sullivan, who scored his lone PGA Tour victory in that event.
Corey Pavin, who had a hole-in-one, was tied with Bobby Wadkins at 64.
“It woke me up,” Pavin said of the 172-yard, 7-iron shot that ran into the cup on the second hole.
Wadkins, who has won $1.4 million in a 14-year career but is still seeking his first title, had 9 threes in a bogey-free effort.
“I hate to sound like I’m complaining after a 64, but it could have been really low,” said Wadkins, who missed 4 birdie putts of about 8 feet. Two of those misses came on the last two holes.
South African David Frost, who won the Southern Open in his last start, Greg Ladehoff and Duffy Waldorf were at 65. Tom Watson shot a 66.
