The Chicago Cubs are interested in acquiring Don Mattingly, the New York Yankees first baseman whose criticism of management this season aroused the ire of owner George Steinbrenner.

Cub General Manager Jim Frey confirmed that the teams have talked about a trade. But Frey scoffed at a published report that the Yankees want pitcher Rick Sutcliffe, shortstop Shawon Dunston, outfielder Rafael Palmeiro and first baseman Mark Grace.

“That’s Dallas Green talking to one of his old-buddy reporters,” Frey said of the Yankees’ new manager, former general manager of the Cubs.
