Tennis Roundup : Chamberlin Battles Edberg but Loses

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden struggled to a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Paul Chamberlin of Manhattan Beach, and second-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany played superbly in beating countryman Eric Jelen, 6-2, 6-1, in quarterfinal matches of the Seiko Super tennis tournament Friday at Tokyo.

Edberg, ranked No. 3 in the world, is the tournament’s defending champion. Chamberlin is ranked No. 264.

Chamberlin, a qualifier, played hard, hitting powerful serves and returning Edberg’s shots well as he held serve through the 11th game of the 1st set.

Edberg finally broke Chamberlin’s serve in the 12th game with well-placed passing shots and solid service returns.

In the 2nd set, Edberg broke service in the 4th and 8th games.

In other matches, 6th-seeded John Fitzgerald of Australia upset 3rd-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, and Richard Matuszewski defeated Japan’s No. 1 player, Shuzo Matsuoka, 6-4, 6-4.

Third-seeded Manuela Maleeva defeated her sister Katarina, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the semifinals of the $200,000 European Indoor women’s tournament at Zurich, Switzerland. In another quarterfinal, top-seeded Pam Shriver routed Brenda Shultz of Holland, 6-3, 6-3.

It was the 7th tournament encounter between the Bulgarian sisters, and 19-year-old Katarina, ranked 15th in the world, has yet to win a set against 21-year-old Manuela, ranked 8th.

Second-seeded Jonas Svensson of Sweden was upset by unranked Horst Skoff of Austria, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of a $205,000 Grand Prix men’s tournament at Vienna. No. 1-seeded Thomas Muster, also of Austria, defeated 8th-seeded Marjan Vajda of Czechoslovakia, 7-6, 6-2.

In other quarterfinal matches, 3rd-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union beat qualifier Richey Reneberg, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, and 4th-seeded Kevin Curren ousted Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands, 6-2, 6-2.
