La Russa Is Named Manager of the Year in American League
Tony La Russa, who led the Oakland Athletics to 104 regular-season victories, most in the major leagues, Tuesday was named the American League Manager of the Year.
La Russa received 103 points and easily beat out Joe Morgan of the Boston Red Sox, who finished second with 89.
La Russa and Detroit’s Sparky Anderson are the only two-time winners of the award. La Russa first won in 1983 as manager of the Chicago White Sox.
In his second season with the A’s, La Russa, 44, led his team to the AL West title. The A’s swept Morgan’s Red Sox in 4 games to advance to the World Series, where they lost in 5 games to the Dodgers.
Voting was conducted by 28 members of the Baseball Writers Assn. of America, 2 from each AL city, after the regular season.
