Titans to Play Northridge in Football Next Year

Share

Cal State Fullerton, needing to fill a home football date next season, has agreed to a game against Cal State Northridge, which will be the first Division II team the Titans have played since 1982.

Although a contract has not been signed, Northridge and Fullerton have agreed to meet Sept. 9 at Santa Ana Stadium.

Fullerton, which traditionally has played most of its games on the road, adopted a policy last year requiring a minimum of 4 home games, a move designed in part to maintain fan support in anticipation of a campus stadium to be completed in 1991.

Fullerton has 3 Big West Conference home games next season, thus needing a nonconference home game to fill the requirement.

“We would rather play a major opponent at home, but we’re not always going to be able to get a major opponent until our stadium is built,” Fullerton Athletic Director Ed Carroll said.

Carroll said Northridge’s ability to draw fans was another reason the game was scheduled. Fullerton’s paid home attendance last season was the lowest among NCAA Division I schools.
