Tennis Roundup : McEnroe in Quarterfinals of Paris Open

John McEnroe took advantage of Paul Annacone’s inconsistent serve to overpower his American compatriot, 6-3, 6-2, Thursday night and gain the quarterfinals of the $1.1-million Paris Open tournament.

Also qualifying for today’s quarterfinals were Aaron Krickstein and Brad Gilbert, Israel’s Amos Mansdorf and the Soviet Union’s Andrei Chesnokov.

McEnroe never lost his serve in the match and profited from seven double faults by Annacone, many on crucial points. Annacone double faulted on the last point of the sixth game, giving McEnroe the only service break he needed in the first set.

In the second set, Annacone double faulted on the last point of the third game for another break and then was broken two games later when he suffered a pair of double faults.

Krickstein overcame a 5-3 deficit in the first set against Australia’s John Fitzgerald and went on to win, 7-5, 6-4. Gilbert, a finalist in this tournament last year, scored three service breaks in each set for a 6-3, 6-4 victory over fourth-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia; Mansdorf was a winner over American Derrick Rostagno, 6-3, 6-2, and Chesnokov beat Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 6-4, 6-2.

Fourth-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch survived a determined bid by British qualifier Claire Wood to win, 7-5, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals of the $250,000 Midland Group women’s tournament at Brighton, England.

Joining Kohde-Kilsch in the quarterfinals were another West German, Sylvia Hanika, Nathalie Tauziat of France, Bulgarian Manuela Maleeva and American Lori McNeil.

The fifth-seeded McNeil defeated Britain’s Sara Gomer, 6-4, 6-2; Maleeva, third seeded, beat Isabelle Demongeot of France, 6-3, 6-1; Hanika, sixth seeded, defeated qualifier Jana Pospisilova of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-3, and eighth-seeded Tauziat defeated Jo Durie of Britain, also, 6-3, 6-3.

The tournament’s top two, Steffi Graf of West Germany and Pam Shriver, had the day off.
