The Detroit Tigers on Friday traded pitcher Walt Terrell to the San Diego Padres for infielders Chris Brown and Keith Moreland.

It was the second major trade in 5 days for the Padres. On Monday, they acquired first baseman Jack Clark and pitcher Pat Clements from the New York Yankees for pitchers Lance McCullers and Jimmy Jones and outfielder Stanley Jefferson.

Terrell, a 30-year-old right-hander, probably will replace Jones in the rotation.

“I’m very happy with the trade,” Terrell said. “The Padres have played very well, and hopefully I can add something.

“There have been rumors all year that I’d be traded someplace, and the San Diego rumor lasted the longest of any of them. But I really didn’t think I’d get traded this winter.”

Meanwhile, the Tigers announced they will not offer a contract to infielder Darrell Evans for next season.

The Tigers had been expected to trade a pitcher in an effort to improve the team’s offensive attack, which struggled for most of the season.

Terrell was 7-16 for the Tigers after missing all of spring training and the start of the regular season with an ankle injury. He had a 54-48 record in 4 seasons with the Tigers. The right-hander came to Detroit in 1984 from the New York Mets in exchange for infielder Howard Johnson.

Brown, 27, played in only 80 games in 1988 because of injuries, batting .235 with 2 home runs and 19 RBIs. The third baseman hit .272 over 5 seasons with the Padres and the San Francisco Giants.

Moreland, 34, is a 10-year veteran and a career .279 hitter. Last year, the first baseman hit .256 with 5 home runs and 64 RBIs for San Diego. His best year was with the Chicago Cubs in 1985 when he batted .307 with 14 home runs and 106 RBIs.

Evans, 41, batted only .208 last year with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs. In 5 seasons with Detroit, Evans hit 141 home runs with 405 RBIs.

Cleveland designated hitter Ron Kittle led a group of six players who declared free agency.

Outfielder-designated hitter George Hendrick of the Angels, infielders Domingo Ramos of the Angels and Jerry Royster of Atlanta, and pitchers Scott Sanderson of the Chicago Cubs and Greg Harris of Philadelphia increased the free-agent group to 39 players. The declaration period ends Nov. 4.
