Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : Mayor Files Complaint Against Opponent

Share

Santa Ana Mayor Dan Young has filed a complaint with the state Fair Political Practices Commission charging that one of his opponents in the mayoral race, George Hanna, concealed the “true identities” of some of his campaign contributors.

Hanna failed to list the occupations and employers of about 50 contributors, many of them from outside the state, on his latest campaign statement, filed Oct. 23 in the city clerk’s office.

His earlier campaign statements included such information.

In a complaint sent earlier this week to the commission, Young said Hanna filed “an illegal campaign disclosure statement that attempts to conceal the true identity of the contributors to his campaign, and fails to list information about the true identities of out-of-state PAC (political action committee) contributors.”

“Who are these people?” Young asked Thursday.

Hanna denied that he had done anything illegal. He said that when he filed his statement with City Clerk Janice Guy, he was told that he did not need to include occupation and employer information as long as he included contributors’ addresses.

Guy said Thursday that Hanna misunderstood her. “I told him to give me as complete information as possible,” said Guy, “and that if he did not have it (addresses) we would take it as is . . . but not that it was correct. He could always amend it later on.”
