John Breitenbucher, roused by his dogs, escaped a fire early Tuesday in his mobile home at the Newport Terrace Mobile Home Park at 824 W. 15th St., according to a spokesman for the Newport Beach Fire Department.
Breitenbucher, who lives alone, was awakened by his two small dogs after the fire broke out about 3:25 a.m. He was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian for treatment of smoke inhalation and then released.
According to the park manager, who asked not to be identified by name, Breitenbucher and his dogs went to live with Breitenbucher’s sister in Laguna Beach.
Damage to the mobile home was estimated at $35,000.
“He lost everything. Everything he owned was in that coach. He didn’t even save his shoes,” the manager said.
