High School Volleyball Playoffs : Chaminade Pulls Upset in 1st Round

Middle blocker Kim Kisylia and outside hitter Alissa Levisohn each had 9 kills as unseeded Chaminade upset seventh-seeded Notre Dame Academy, 15-7, 17-15, 15-4, in a Southern Section 4-A Division match Wednesday at Chaminade.

Chaminade (12-5) trailed, 5-0, in the first game before staging a 15-2 run to win going away. The Eagles also won the third game in decisive manner, scoring 11 consecutive points to break a 4-4 tie.

Setter Amy Bloodgood had 18 assists for Chaminade, which plays Thousand Oaks on Friday.

Thousand Oaks d. Alhambra 15-0, 15-7, 15-7--The Lancers, the Marmonte League co-champions and the No. 2-seeded team in the 4-A Division, swept Alhambra (10-7) behind Amy Chellevold’s 12 kills, 11 assists and 8 service aces.

Jamie Heggen added 6 kills for Thousand Oaks (16-1).

Newbury Park d. Burroughs, 15-8, 15-1, 10-15, 15-12--Fifth-ranked Newbury Park will play Louisville on Friday after defeating Burroughs behind Camille Mitchell’s 13 kills and 9 digs in the 4-A match.

Middle blocker Marlo Cormier had 5 blocks and 6 digs for Newbury Park (16-1). Setter Shannon Mutch added 7 kills and 37 assists.

Louisville d. Glendale 15-10, 15-8, 15-12--The San Fernando Valley League champions eased past Glendale, the third-place entry from the Pacific League, in the 4-A match at Louisville.

Setter Lisa Sunari had 8 kills and Torie Sumner had 7 kills for Louisville (9-8).

Marymount d. Notre Dame, 15-12, 15-8, 15-12--Middle blocker Beth Cogan had 7 blocks, 6 kills and a service ace for Notre Dame, but it wasn’t enough against the sixth-ranked team in the 4-A.

Stephanie Burns and Dana Marasca each had 4 kills for Notre Dame (8-8).

Royal d. Arcadia, 15-11, 15-14, 15-7--Royal, the third-place team from the Marmonte League, will play Gahr on Friday after knocking off Arcadia, the No. 1 team from the Pacific League.

Calabasas d. Montebello, 16-18, 15-5, 15-4, 13-15, 15-13--Outside hitter Keri Ellman had a season-high 28 kills to lead Calabasas (11-4), the fifth-ranked team in the 3-A Division.

Canyon d. Santa Ynez, 15-12, 15-3, 4-15, 15-10--Setter Michelle Ferran had 9 kills to lead Canyon (14-1) in the 3-A game at Canyon.

Campbell Hall d. Bishop, 15-9, 15-10, 15-6--Outside hitter Abby Ackroyd had season-high 17 kills and setter Jeanelle Meskimen had 33 assists to lead Campbell Hall (14-3) in the 1-A playoff at Campbell Hall.

Campbell Hall trailed, 10-2, in the second game, but Tanya Mathews served 12 points in a row to close out game.

L.A. Baptist. d. Regina Caeli, 15-2, 15-0, 15-4--Middle blocker Sandy Null had 6 kills and Bernie Verwey had 5 kills and 3 aces to lead top-ranked L. A. Baptist (16-0) to an easy win in a 1-A game at home.

Village Christian d. Mojave, 18-16, 6-15, 15-5, 4-15, 16-14--The Crusaders (13-6), second-place finishers in the Alpha League, blew one match-point opportunity in the fifth game but held on to win in a first-round 1-A match at Mojave.

Birmingham d. Reseda, 11-15, 15-13, 7-15, 15-13, 17-15--Monica Chavez had 22 kills, Sacha Klein had 19 kills and setter Aimee Sales added 16 as Birmingham ousted the second-seeded Regents in a City Section 3-A quarterfinal.

Van Nuys d. Hamilton, 10-15, 15-2, 15-4, 15-7--Shannan Marley had 14 kills and Stacie Toon added 13 more as Van Nuys won a City 3-A playoff game at Hamilton.
