Mazurie Signs to Play Basketball at CSUN

One tiny shuffle for basketball, one medium-size step for the Northridge basketball program.

Bill Mazurie, a 6-foot, 3-inch guard from Capistrano Valley High, on Wednesday became the first player ever to sign with Cal State Northridge during the NCAA’s early signing period.

CSUN’s planned move to Division I athletics in 1990 played a role in his decision, Mazurie said, in addition to the possibility of playing in a new 10,000-seat arena, which is in the planning stages.

Coach Pete Cassidy said that the ability to sign a player early is an indication that Northridge is headed in the right direction. He acknowledged, however, that the arena becoming reality, or progress toward joining a major conference would have a greater impact.

“It’s a step, certainly,” he said of Mazurie’s signing.
