PREP FOOTBALL : Sea View League : Two Vazquez Field Goals Lead Estancia to 13-10 Win

Estancia High School closed out Sea View League play Friday night with a 13-10 victory over Saddleback before a crowd of 1,400 at Orange Coast College.

The playoff-bound Eagles finished the season with a 7-2-1 overall record and a 2-2-1 mark in league play. Saddleback, also headed to the Division VI playoffs, ended at 3-6-1 and 2-2-1 .

A pass interception with 5:04 left by defensive back Oliver Wright on his team’s 42-yard line clinched the win for Estancia.

Saddleback took the early lead when Beto Zavala kicked a 45-yard field goal with 1:57 remaining in the first quarter.

With 9:05 before halftime, Estancia tied the score on a 32-yard field goal by Marco Vazquez. The score capped a 10-play Eagle drive.

Estancia took the lead on another Vazquez field goal--from 37 yards out--with 1:05 left in the first half. It was linebacker Art Carrido’s fumble recovery on the Saddleback 42-yard line that set up the 9-play Eagle scoring drive.

Estancia running back Josh Wojtkiewicz, behind the blocking of center Chris Coons and guard Chris Delatorre, gained 81 yards in 19 carries in the first half. He finished with 119 yards in 13 carries. Wojtkiewicz scored Estancia’s only touchdown on a 37-yard pass from quarterback Dan Ucker with 7:02 left in the third quarter. Ucker completed 11 of 22 passes for 99 yards.

Trailing 13-3 late in the third quarter, Saddleback came back with 27 seconds left to score its only touchdown on a 3-yard run by halfback J.J. Fejeran. Zavala’s kick made it 13-10 at the end of the quarter.

The leading ground gainer for Saddleback was Tony Colthirst, who gained 104 yards.
