City Clerk Merle Hagemeyer to Retire
After 12 years as Glendale’s official record keeper, Merle H. Hagemeyer, 73, announced this week that he will retire as city clerk at the end of the year.
Hagemeyer has held the post since 1976, when he was appointed to complete an unexpired term. He was elected without opposition to three subsequent 4-year terms.
Hagemeyer said he expects the Glendale City Council to temporarily appoint Deputy Clerk Aileen Boyle to the full-time position until the term expires in April. A replacement will then be determined by citywide election.
The filing period for candidates seeking to fill the position, which pays an annual salary of $55,464, will be from Jan. 5 to 26.
Hagemeyer was vice president of a development company before he joined the city in 1971 as assistant city clerk.
Born in Colorado Springs, Colo., Hagemeyer has lived in the area since the age of 10 and calls himself “practically a native.” He has a 28-year perfect attendance record with the Kiwanis Club of Glendale.
Hagemeyer and his wife, Nadean, will move next month to their new home in Mission Viejo to be closer to their two sons and grandchildren.
