Community College Roundup : Golden West Wins Another Title

The Golden West College women’s volleyball team defeated Fullerton, 15-7, 15-1, 15-17, 15-10, Wednesday at Golden West to clinch the Orange Empire Conference championship.

Sabrina Dennis had 16 kills and 4 blocks and Dannie Doll had 9 kills for Golden West, which won its fifth conference title in 6 seasons. Golden West, the top-ranked team in the state, has won 29 consecutive conference matches over 3 seasons.

It was the 16th consecutive victory for Golden West (18-1, 11-0 in the conference) this season.

In another Orange Empire women’s volleyball match:

Orange Coast 3, Saddleback 2--Jody Fee had 19 kills to lead visiting Orange Coast (8-11, 6-5) to a 15-9, 9-15, 15-13, 14-16, 15-12 victory in a match that lasted 2 hours 35 minutes. Amy Vanderpool had 22 kills and 19 blocks for Saddleback (6-14, 3-8).

In the Fullerton men’s basketball tournament:

Fullerton 83, West Los Angeles 76--Freshman forward Mike Goff scored a team-high 21 points and had 10 rebounds for Fullerton (3-0) in the first-round game. Sophomore forward Geoff Adams had 18 points and sophomore guard Kelli McKinney had 9 assists. Fullerton trailed, 44-41, at the half. West Los Angeles is 1-1.

El Camino, the defending state champions, defeated Grossmont, 75-72, in the other first-round game and plays Fullerton at 8 p.m. Friday in the second round.

In the Fullerton women’s basketball tournament:

Fullerton 93, Rancho Santiago 27--Kelli Johnson scored 19 points and Viv Perez 16 for Fullerton (2-0) in the first round. Lisa Crosskey scored 14 and Debbie Wagner and Stacy Johnson 12 each for Fullerton, which led, 51-7, at the half. Rancho Santiago is 1-1.

West Los Angeles defeated Mt. San Antonio, 80-18, in the other first-round game.
