Local News in Brief : Fire Dept. Admits Error in Citation
Los Angeles Fire Department officials said Friday that the owners of the Security Pacific Plaza building were erroneously cited for not being in compliance with a provision of the city’s new sprinkler law.
Capt. Hugh Tucker, commander of the department’s High-Rise Inspection Unit, said an error in the placement of a decimal point led to the citation against the owners of the downtown Los Angeles building--a fire inspector was erroneously told by a worker at the 57-story building that its 145,000-gallon water sprinkler reservoir had a capacity of 14,500 gallons, he said. The new ordinance requires a reservoir with a minimum capacity of 40,000 gallons.
Officials of Tishman West Management Corp., the firm that manages the building, complained that the citation was in error.
Although that portion of the citation was rescinded, Tucker said the hazard notice still remains in effect because the building does not contain fire-retardant doors separating elevator lobbies from the rest of the building.
