College Basketball : DeLaveaga’s 31 Points Not Enough as Cal Lutheran Loses Opener, 98-83

Steve deLaveaga scored 31 points and Cal Lutheran had 4 players score in double figures, but host San Francisco State posted a 98-83 victory in the nonconference season opener for both teams Friday night.

DeLaveaga, who also led Cal Lutheran rebounders with 10, needs 46 points to tie Gary Bowman as CLU’s career scoring leader.

Senior guard Jeff Logsdon added 14 points for the Kingsmen, freshman Damon Charlot scored 11 and Mike Demeter added 10.

Trailing 47-38 at halftime, Cal Lutheran closed to within 2 points midway in the second half before the Gators pulled away. The Kingsmen shot 42% from the floor and sank 23 of 30 field goals.

Cal State Northridge 83, Azusa Pacific 68--Chris Cavalin scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and Vicki Mallet added 14 points to lead the Cal State Northridge women’s team in the first round of the Mustang Classic at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Julie Arlotto added 11 points for the Lady Matadors, who will play in the championship game today. Northridge converted 31 of 69 field goals (44%) in its season opener.

Christian Heritage 110, Occidental 95--Senior forward John Keister scored 23 points and Ethan Caldwell added 17 for Occidental in the first round of the Christ College tournament.

Six Tigers scored in double figures.
