Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : 2 Women Injured After Running Into Traffic

Two women were seriously injured early Sunday when they ran into traffic in front of a Costa Mesa bar and were struck by a suspected drunk driver, authorities said.

Margaret Anne McCarthy, 22, of Anaheim and Kimberly Ann Rasmussen, 24, of Costa Mesa were both listed in serious but stable condition Sunday at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital.

John Alan Routh, 26, of Fullerton was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving after he crashed into the women at 1:40 a.m., Costa Mesa Police Sgt. John Pherrin.

Pherrin said police do not know why the women ran in front of Routh’s Volkswagen Jetta on the northbound lanes of the Costa Mesa Freeway at 20th Street. They were struck outside of Hoagy Barmichael’s, a popular bar, Pherrin said.

Both women suffered numerous broken bones, he said.
