Local News in Brief : Mississippi Man Killed by Auto in Pacoima

A 64-year-old Mississippi man was struck and killed by a car as he walked along a dark street in Pacoima late Saturday, police said.
Joseph L. McNeese of Poplarville, Miss., was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics soon after the 11:50 p.m. accident on Laurel Canyon Boulevard north of Maclay Street, said Lt. John Mitchell of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.
Witnesses told police that McNeese was walking north along Laurel Canyon Boulevard and stepped into the street to avoid a puddle when he was hit by the car and thrown 56 feet, Mitchell said. The car, which Mitchell declined to describe, sped away, he said.
No suspects were in custody Sunday, police said.
