A blocked sewer main in East San Diego on Wednesday sent sewage flowing out of a manhole and into a creek that empties into San Diego Bay near the 32nd Street Navy Station, health authorities reported.

Late Wednesday, the blocked main sent sewage flowing at 200 gallons a minute out of a manhole near the 3300 block of Marlborough Avenue, said Lyn Wallis, spokesman for the county Department of Health Services. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., an estimated 50,000 gallons of sewage backed up into the street, down a canyon and into a creek that leads to the bay.

Wallis said city crews hoped late Wednesday to divert the sewage into a manhole downstream from the blockage. The health department has posted signs along the creek and notified the Navy so its divers can protect themselves against the sewage in the bay, he said.
