Loyola’s Scoring Machine to Test Gauchos Tonight

Loyola Marymount, coming off its record-setting opener, travels to UC Santa Barbara to face the Gauchos at 9 tonight. The late start is to accommodate ESPN, which will televise the game.
Each team is 1-0, and the game matches the only California teams that qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament last season.
Loyola won its opener Monday night over Azusa Pacific, 164-138, tying the NCAA record for most points by one team and breaking the Division I mark for combined points. Leading scorer Hank Gathers had 33 points and 12 rebounds in 19 minutes, and the starters scored 81 points in 51 combined minutes. Guard Bo Kimble, who had 12 points in 10 minutes but didn’t play in the second half, is hampered by a sore knee that limits his stamina but he will probably play.
Santa Barbara, playing its home opener, opened its season with a 71-70 victory Colorado. Carrick DeHart, a Santa Monica High School graduate, led all scorers with 26 points, with Eric McArthur adding 17 points and 15 rebounds.
