High Schools : Torrey Pines Scores 100 in Opener

The Torrey Pines boys’ basketball team showed it should again be a county power this season, rolling to a 100-71 victory over Rancho Buena Vista Wednesday in the Torrey Pines Tipoff Tournament opener.

Torrey Pines led 28-13, after, the first period and scored at least 23 points in every quarter.

Courtie Miller, who signed a letter of intent to play at San Diego State next season, led all scorers with 24 points. Miller also had 12 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocks.

“We had 50 rebounds, and that’s why we were able to score like we did,” Torrey Pines Coach John Farrell said.

Darren Cox scored 16 points, and Kyle Armstrong added 15 for Torrey Pines. Darryl Parker had 23 points and Todd Fellars 20 to lead Rancho Buena Vista, which started three sophomores.

In other Tipoff Tournament games:

Ramona 76, St. Augustine 48--Ramona scored the first 18 points and outscored St. Augustine, 28-9, in the first quarter at home. Tony Newman, who had 10 points in the first quarter, led all scorers with 22, and Nate Hollingsworth added 13 for Ramona (1-0). Mike Mossuto led St. Augustine (0-2) with 14 points.

Mt. Helix Tournament

Mission Bay 45, San Pasqual 36--Mission Bay held San Pasqual to just 12 points in the first half at Helix. Erik Meek scored 15 points to lead San Pasqual (1-1), which committed 24 turnovers. Brett Grebing led Mission Bay (1-1) with 11 points.

San Diego-University City Tournament

Crawford 70, Coronado 34--Tracy Holton scored 20 points and added 8 assists as Crawford led, 28-11, at the half and cruised to the victory. Dana Hawkins scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds, and Chris Johnson had 16 points for Crawford (1-0).

Grossmont Tournament

Santana 70, Bonita Vista 62--Dean Thrall scored 29 points and had 18 rebounds to lead Santana, the defending Division I champion, to the season-opening victory. Paul Newark and Jason Maloney scored 13 points apiece, and Matt Panebianco added 11 for Santana, which outscored Bonita Vista, 25-19, in the third quarter. Matt Gibbs had 16 points to lead Bonita Vista (0-1).

Nonleague

Claremont 74, El Cajon Valley 48--Ray McDavid had a triple double to lead the Chieftains in a nonleague game at home. McDavid score 20 points, had 18 rebounds and added 11 assists. Claremont (1-0) broke the game open by outscoring the Braves (0-1), 28-10, in the third period.
