THE COLLEGES : Community College Roundup : Muller-Stach Scores 30 as Golden West Wins Big

Markus Muller-Stach scored 30 points to lead Golden West College to an 84-65 victory over Palomar Thursday in the second round of the Antelope Valley men’s basketball tournament at Antelope Valley College.

Muller-Stach, a sophomore from Corona del Mar, made 8 of 9 shots in the second half. He was 13 of 20 for the game.

The Rustlers (7-1) jumped to a 15-5 lead in the first 5 minutes and Palomar never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Alex Kreps had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Golden West. Steve Moser added 10 points.

In the Grossmont tournament:

Rancho Santiago 72, San Diego Mesa 64--Tommy Villaneuva scored 16 points to lead the Dons in a first-round game. Rancho Santiago (5-2) took control midway through the second half and led by as many as 17 points. Tony Smally and Gene Altamirano each had 11 points for the Dons. Smally also had 8 rebounds.

In the Miles Eaton tournament:

Orange Coast 74, MiraCosta 58--Alan Sclines scored 22 points and Dareck Crane 16 to lead host Orange Coast in a first-round game.

In the Cypress women’s tournament

MiraCosta 79, Cypress 61--Freshman forward Laura Hughes had 29 points and 16 rebounds to lead MiraCosta in a first-round game. MiraCosta led, 42-29, at halftime. Vicky Silva scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for Cypress (3-4).

Moorpark 69, Orange Coast 52--Kerie Marshall scored 16 points to lead Moorpark (5-1). Melayne Green scored 22 for Orange Coast (2-5).

In the College of the Sequoias women’s tournament:

Fullerton 76, Fresno 50--Kelly Johnson scored 23 points for the Hornets in a first-round game. Fullerton led, 40-24, at halftime. Debbie Wagner scored 15 points and Vivian Perez 14 for the Hornets.

Golden West 103, De Anza 62--Lori Totosz scored 18 points to lead the Rustlers in a first-round game. Kim Wilson scored 16 and Dede Stigar 15 for Golden West (6-1), which led, 61-33, at halftime. Donna Gondringer and Claudette Jackson each had 10 rebounds.
