Colleges : SDSU Women Advance in Volleyball

The San Diego State women’s volleyball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championships with a victory Saturday at San Jose State.

It took the fourth-ranked Aztecs (ranked 13th nationally) four games to eliminate fifth-ranked San Jose, 15-7, 15-13, 14-16, 15-8. SDSU plays Thursday at Hawaii, which defeated San Luis Obispo in consecutive games Friday.

Jackie Mendez led the Aztecs with 29 kills and 30 blocks and upped her hitting percentage to 297 from 252. Angela Martin had 18 kills, Amy Erben had 14 and Kim Washington added 13.

“The girls were hitting the ball hard with low fast sets,” Coach Rudy Swara said. “The young players played well, and it was great to see Jackie have a good match.”

SDSU got behind early in 2 of the 4 games--when they were behind.
