Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Corona del Mar Wins Title in Laguna Beach Tournament

Matt Herrington scored 11 points to lead Corona del Mar High School (3-1) to a 46-38 victory over Dana Hills Saturday in the championship game of the Laguna Beach boys’ basketball tournament.

Herrington was also named the tournament’s most valuable player.

In other Laguna Beach tournament action:

Laguna Beach 57, Huntington Beach 55 (3 Overtimes)--Laguna Beach junior John Trevino hit a 3-point shot with 5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score, 51-51, and send it into the first overtime period.

The Artists eventually prevailed in the third overtime to win the consolation championship.

Brea-Olinda 81, Charter Oaks 71--Keith Walker scored 36 points to lead Brea-Olinda (3-1) in the third-place game.

Shane Bowers had 25 points for Charter Oaks (2-2).

Laguna Hills 76, Whittier 66--Chris Sheff scored 20 points and had 10 assists to lead Laguna over Whittier in the seventh-place game.

Billy Schellenberg, a 6-3 senior forward, had 40 rebounds in 3 games and was named to the all-tournament team.

In the Gahr-Cerritos tournament:

Kennedy 77, Antelope Valley 74--Mike Pettengill scored 20 points and had 10 assists, with Jim Barker adding 19 points to lead the Fighting Irish (3-1) in the fifth-place game at Gahr.

Kennedy led, 47-31, at halftime, but Antelope Valley (2-2) outscored Kennedy, 21-9, in the third quarter. Pettengill, however, scored 12 points in the fourth period to spark the Irish’s rally.

In the San Clemente tournament:

Savanna 64, Fallbrook 42--Sophomore forward Mustapha Abdi scored 22 points and had 17 rebounds to pace Savanna (5-0) in the championship game.

Abdi, the tournament’s most valuable player, scored 10 points in the first half when Savanna opened a 14-point lead.

Senior center Tim Tillman scored 14 points and reserve center Eric Preuss added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Savanna.

Fallbrook, which had trouble handling Savanna’s full-court pressing defense, was led by reserve Chris Miller, who scored 10 points.

Foothill 55, San Clemente 39--Center Jamal Duff scored 17 points to lead Foothill to victory in the third-place game.

In the Laguna Beach tournament:

Brea Olinda 81, Charter Oaks 71--Forward Keith Walker scored 36 points to lead Brea to third place.

In the Notre Dame Riverside tournament:

Orange Lutheran 68, Aquinas 60--Daryl Cole scored 24 points, Jason Neben added 17 and Pat Bagatourian had 16 to lead Orange Lutheran (5-1) in the third-place game.

Donnell Porter led Aquinas with 16 points.

In the Loyola tournament:

Santa Ana Valley 84, Pius X 81--Court Bickmore made 2 free throws with 3 seconds remaining to hold off a late rally for the victory. Chuck Steen scored 33 points to lead the Falcons (2-2) in the third-place game.
